At 48 years old, I thought I was WAY past the point of fixing my teeth. When Dr. John and I started talking about the health benefits I would receive from straighter teeth, I decided to give it a try. I was shocked at how fast I was able to start seeing the results! Braces or Invisalign®?
Answering the question of which treatment is best for you, your child or teen will require consideration of several factors, including: dental issues and personal preference.
Both Invisalign® and Braces have great benefits, and the best way to make a choice is to become informed about your options.
We have written an article below that talks about the different features of both Invisalign® and braces.
What Happens at the Orthodontic Consultation?
Consultations at our office are always at no charge to you. It is our intention during this visit to:
- Get oriented and acquainted with our office so you are more comfortable in your surroundings.
- Get acquainted with our practice philosophies. We give you the scoop on WHY we do things that way we do!
- Perform a thorough examination to determine if orthodontic treatment is needed.
- Discuss flexible payment options that fit your lifestyle.
- Listen to all of your questions and concerns.
Let’s face it, Orthodontics can be complicated! Getting answers and guidance can help you make the most educated decisions possible.
What Initial Records Are Taken?
In order for us to determine whether or not orthodontic treatment is needed, and if so, what treatment plans would be most beneficial to you, we will gather the following diagnostic records:
- X-rays (Note: we use the latest digital technology to minimize any radiation exposure to all Patients!)
- Clinical Findings
Sometimes everything looks great “to the eye” but x-rays can uncover other areas of concern. Once we analyze the x-rays, if we determine there are issues worth addressing, we immediately begin putting together a treatment plan to discuss with you.
Does Insurance Cover Orthodontics?
If your dental insurance has an orthodontic benefit available, we are happy to file your claims for you. It’s a good idea to check with your insurance provider on the details regarding what benefits you are entitled to.
Treatment Plan for Teens and Adults
Because no two people (or smiles) are identical, we create a treatment plan specifically designed to achieve the smile you’ve always wanted. Any options that you have will be fully explained, and all questions clearly answered. If any coordination with other dental professionals will be needed, this will be fully explained as well.
Treatment Plan for Children
For young children ages 6-11, or before all the permanent (adult) teeth are in place, the treatment plan is usually to monitor growth and development and see periodically every 6-12 months for a check-up.
If the concerns are significant, treatment may be recommended at this age to “set the stage” for later treatments. We will carefully coordinate these future treatments as timing certain treatments during development can be critical. As we explain the details with the different options that you will have, the more questions you ask, the better.
It not unusual or uncommon for your first active treatment to be scheduled on the SAME DAY as the Initial Consultation if you so desire. It requires an additional 30-60 minutes with one of our talented Team Members to either place braces or scan for Invisalign (if it’s an appropriate treatment choice).
Your first visit is so important because it means that you have officially taken action towards a brighter smile and more confident you. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about your first visit we would love to hear from you!
You can contact us by calling (701) 255-1311, TOLL-FREE (800) 732-3768 or sending us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. One of our team members will get back to you as quickly as possible! Oh yeah, we do Facebook and Twitter if you are into social media too!
1. Your Invisalign® Plan is Created
First, our friendly smile team will take a 3-D scan and create a digital model of your teeth during your complimentary consultation. From this model, Dr. John will map out a precise Invisalign® treatment plan customized for your smile. Within minutes, you will see a simulation of how your teeth will move!
2. Your Aligners are Made
Next, a series of clear aligners are created specifically for you. Made of a smooth & comfortable BPA-free plastic, Invisalign® is designed to gently and gradually shift your teeth into place. You simply wear them throughout the day, and remove them when necessary. Most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them!
3. Watch Your Smile Improve
Approximately every two weeks, you will switch to a new set of aligners. To monitor your Invisalign® progress, you will have occasional checkups with Dr. John, usually only every 8-10 weeks (less often than braces). At each stage, you will be able to watch your smile improve. Best of all, your treatment is practically invisible!
4. Reveal Your New Smile!
Upon completion of Invisalign® treatment you will be smiling more than ever! Never hide your smile again! Dr. John will have a custom retainer made so that your smile stays beautiful for life. You will also have the ability to schedule office visits after your treatment is complete. Congratulations!
The initial process for Invisalign
While Invisalign® is really good at what it does, there are certain situations where Invisalign® will not work very effectively, which is why it’s important to start your Invisalign® treatment with a free exam at our office. At the exam we will determine whether or not you are a good candidate for Invisalign® treatment. A key to remember is that Invisalign® works for teens and adults.
Once we determine you are a good candidate for Invisalign®, we take records. The records include:
- Photographs of your teeth and face
- State-of-the-art 3D video imaging of your teeth
- Two x-rays
Once we have those records, we send them off to Invisalign® with detailed instructions on how we want the teeth to be moved. With the latest technology, Dr. John has the ability to virtually move your teeth via computer so your result is a masterpiece!
We then log on and review the movements of the teeth. Typically, they get it pretty close, but we may have to instruct them on some fine point details of how we want the teeth to be moved.
They make the changes, and then we review them again. We usually need to do this a couple of times to get the teeth exactly where we want them.
Once we are satisfied, we ask Invisalign® to go ahead and make a series of aligners and mail them to our office. It usually takes about 4 weeks from the time of the scan until we get the aligners back to our office. Then we are ready to start straightening your teeth!
The Invisalign straightening process
You will wear a set of Invisalign aligners for two weeks at a time. Each aligner is manufactured so that the teeth are slightly straighter than the previous aligner. The teeth will typically move 0.25mm per aligner. So when you put a new aligners in, the teeth in the aligners are slightly straighter than your teeth are. This puts pressure on your teeth, and over the course of two weeks your teeth will move so that they match the aligners. Sometimes we speed up aligner wear to changing once per week.
Once your aligners are in, we will ask you to wear your aligners close to full time. A major advantage of the Invisalign system is that you can take them out to eat. We also ask you to take them out to brush and floss. You will clean the aligners with a toothbrush at the time you are brushing. Typically, you will have your aligners in for about 20 hours a day. Wearing your aligners for this long will help the teeth move to their final position for that particular aligner. If your teeth are not in final position when you go on to the next set of aligners, they will not fit quite as well. This has a cumulative effect and by the time you get 3 or 4 aligners down the line, they will not be fitting well at all.
It is not uncommon to get finished with your last aligner and still have a few teeth that are still slightly out of position. We will explain this ahead of time, because it is pretty normal. If that is the case, we take a new set of scans and have Invisalign make us some more aligners to detail things. The process for this is identical to the process described above. The new aligners will come back in 3-4 weeks and we will continue with straightening your teeth. Invisalign refers to these as refinement aligners. There is NO ADDITIONAL FEE for this as it is part of the process. Most people need to get 1 set of refinement aligners. Invisalign allows us to do this up to 3 times, but in our experience that is very rare.
Attachments and rubber bands
On some people we use something called ‘attachments’ on the teeth. Attachments are small, tooth colored, bumps of plastic material (composite) that we attach to some of the teeth. Basically, what they do is to give a handle or gripping point for the aligner to click into place around. They help the aligner stay on better and they also can put pressure on the teeth in the direction we need to straighten them out. Everyone gets attachments, some people more than others depending on the movements required.
Sometimes we will also ask people to wear rubber-bands with their aligners. This is very similar to what we would ask a Patient to do with traditional braces. We will use these to correct the bite if they are worn from the upper aligner to the lower aligner.
Once we are done with your final aligners, it is time for retainers which look very much like your aligners. Sometimes we make these in our office, sometimes we order them from Invisalign. We ask most people to wear their retainers full time for 3 months and then we cut back to just while sleeping after 6 months. See here for detailed information on the importance of retainers and the retention process.

Hear what real Warford Orthodontics Patients are saying about Invisalign®
Invisalign® are a lot better than braces because its more comfortable, my teeth aren’t as sore. They actually help with dieting a little bit because I don’t want to have to take them out to eat all the time. I’ve had braces before and I prefer Invisalign®.Bruce H.
“I would recommend Invisalign® to anyone that talks about getting braces. I wanted that perfect smile, but as an adult felt uncomfortable with having metal braces. With my Invisalign® half of my friends didn’t even know I had it until I told them. I love the convenience of them and the treatment goes by fast with switching out your retainers every 2 weeks. I now am confident and love my smile! Thanks Dr. John”Carly L.
